It only 'counts' when you're caught after an incident.

If someone 'volunteers' then it's OK. BUT the OP said he was going to 'ask'... big difference.

Haha. That's funny. Too bad it's true! :-)

Let a buddy do it for you. That's the easy answer. Or have the discussion that if the guests want to volunteer something, then that's OK with you. But it has to be stated that it's not a condition of boarding. (or however you want to word it)

When my brother and I had a sailboat, he was donating afternoon sails for a church raffle. This was definitely a cash for passage deal Illegal as heck. He checked with his insurance and they confirmed that the coverage was null and void during these events. Done.

Hey, that's a great idea, Janice. Then later, when no one is looking, slip the guy a fin for the trouble and everybody's happy..!!

Oh no, no, no. . .not anything like a charter. . .surcharge should have been in quotes.

I was thinking more like a barbeque, not quests staying at a house. . .

"Going to the Eastern Shore Saturday"
"Do we need to bring anything?"
"I got the burgers and brats. You can bring a side, chips, beer, or whatever. . .and if you want to chip in a couple bucks for gas, I won't say no . Oh, and bring your fishing pole if you want"

This is definitely something I need to keep in mind when boat shopping. A big reason I want to move into something with more room is for occasional entertaining. And I like taking people out. . .I have a laundry list of people who want to go sailing! If asking for money is frowned upon, its something I need to consider in my personal gas vs diesel debate.

Thanks for your insight!

We take guests because we want/enjoy their company. We won't accept any cash whatsoever. If they bring some booze or food that's great and they usually do. If you want cash, why take them?

You can also have an alacarte type menu you can hand out to your guests/passengers, for example:

being nice to you - $5
laughing at your jokes - $30
agreeing with what you say - $40

... you get the idea

Psneeld covered the legality well.

As to otherwise, I would find it quite tacky for one to ask for fuel. If I am home and ask a friend if they want to go to lunch by car, I don't ask them for fuel. Now considerate guests find a way to show their gratitude and help. They ask if they can bring some dessert or they pick up the check at dinner. But it should all be freely done not as a matter of obligation or keeping score.

As others have said, fishermen going on a multiple day outing do tend to traditionally treat it differently, but all voluntary.

I try not to let guests know how much the boat costs!

I never take money for day trips. I'll tell people what food/booze I have on the boat, that they're welcome to it, and if they want something else they can bring it with them. Almost everyone brings a bottle of wine or some beer or whatever.

For longer trips, we go grocery shopping together before departure. Some guests offer to pay for the bill, others offer to split it. Nobody (yet) has had me pay the whole thing. If offered, I'll split the grocery bill with others.

The only time I took money for fuel was when I had my dad, stepmom, and kids out for 10 days in Alaska. Dad swiped his card at the fuel dock before I could, and I didn't complain!

I'm 25 and the only one of my peers with a boat. I'm happy to have guests onboard and don't want them to feel it's a burden. But I don't want to pay for all their meals and drinks, either.

The entire reason for me having a boat is to have a place where my friends and family can gather. It is an honor to have them aboard!!! The vast majority of them offer to bring something...beer, ice, food, etc. and a few will offer to pay for fuel. I do have a close friend who will occasionally beat me to the fuel pump cashier. But that is just the kind of guy he is.

We place a really nice looking piggy bank on board. It says: Any Donations Appreciated... for cruises over 5 hrs with food and drink supplied. We've gotten rich!

Exchanging anything for a ride (fuel, food, money, dockage fees, expenses) makes the 'fee for hire'.

Are you licensed? Is your vessel up to passenger carrying safety levels? Does your insurance cover this?

Very boring, mundane stuff. But, 'if' something happened, you are treated in court in a whole different way as if you just 'brought someone along'.
Agree with above comments, be very careful with your insurance coverage as it would be a game changer to find out you voided your coverage after an accident.

Be careful, Al. We don't want to turn this into another buttock line thread.

Fishing yes

Cruising no

Many times we have had people come with us and cook bring or prepare the meals and drinks

On the 4th of July we always go out and watch the offshore powerboat races this year instead of in our boat a friend offered to take his out instead of ours

So I offered to get the food for the day
