Bonding question

I just finished bonding my AC raw water strainer for insurance purposes.

I was having a discussion with a boating buddy of mine who also has a Nordic Tug and he wanted to know if my rudder was bonded.
I replied that I had zincs on my rudder, so I thought it didn't need to be bonded.

That got me to thinking...... I thought the bonding was to my engine.
He said it should be run to the large stern zinc plate.

Now I'm confused:confused:

Can someone give me some clarity on this?

Nice presentation but there are two things I'm not clear on. The wiring diagram they show does not have any bonding to the engine block other than via the shaft brush. Is that OK? Second, I think there was a typo when describing the required wire size? Unless I'm reading it wrong it says minimum 4 AWG but they reccommend 6 or 10. Why reccomend smaller than the minimum?

Maybe I should finish my coffee and re-read ?
 
All my boats had bonded systems, until I bought my Californian. They came from the factory without bonding, only shaft and rudder zincs and a zinc pencil in the cooler and I've never bothered to change it. But I've had no problems, this has always been a mystery to me,. :confused:
 
Are they using the negative from the battery to the block as that part of the bonding system and then just bonding system to the negative ground block?

Just got the link to work....seems like that is what is inferred but I believe you are still supposed to have a separate bonding wire.

I think it's that the diagram refers to the "Bonding System" and they define that as...
"A bonding system links all submerged metal to be protected with each other and the anode on the transom. "

What they leave out are all the other grounds that are not submerged metal... including engine.

Re: wire size the text is confusing as they call out sizes as both mm and AWG - 6mm & 10mm ARE larger than 4mm but then they throw in AWG at the end of statement - confusing at best.
 
Was looking at my seacocks the other day and thinking about this bonding discussion. The bonding wires are attached to the base of the seacoks with a stainless steel hose clamp. Seems like using two dissimmilar metals (I guess three if you count the copper wire) is not a good idea?

Also noticed bonding wires attached to the base of the PSS dripless shaft seals also with hose clamps, very green with corrosion. Seems like that application serves no purpose as the hose clamp holds the rubber shaft bellows to the frp shaft tube, no metal there at all. Any reason not to remove them (the wires not the clamps ?)?
