I'm down in Mexico looking at a boat. The boat is a USA documented vessel > $100, 000. Sale would be between 2 individuals with no broker. Transaction would be handled in the USA. Aside from transfering documentation, what other documents (bill of sale) would be required / suggested? Boat would be coming back to the USA and taxed in FL. While the boat has no lean on it, how does one make sure it's not attached in a legal obligation in the USA such as joint property in a divorce or other proceeding?

You'll need the USCG bill of sale, the application for documentation (if you are going to keep the vessel in documentation) and an Abstract of Title. All can be gotten from the NVDC website. You'll also have to comply with Florida registration regulations.

As the vessel is documented, any liens would have to be filed with the USCG: the Abstract of Title will have this information.

Thank you immensely!
