My Yanmar stop running yesterday coincident with fumes and water in the engine room
The engine slowed over about a minute and then stopped and wouldn’t restart
Today it started but there are year is a leak at the exhaust elbow meeting pipe with water and exhaust fumes
Why would that cause the engine to stop?
Obviously I need to replace it but..

The Yanmar GM series has a well known problem of blocking the exhaust elbow with scale build up. That and corrosion could have caused your engine to stop and exhaust/water to leak out.

Unbolt/unscrew the elbow assembly from the end of the exhaust manifold and look inside for scale build up. Replace if plugged and/or corroded.

Go to cruiserforum and do a search, there's every conceivable problem with GM's answered there.
All those guys there are yachties and that size motor was standard issue.
