Today, while clearing off a bookshelf, I came across a book I neglected to recommend in earlier literary discussions, and I need to repair that oversight:
Shattered Sword, by Parshall and Tully is the definitive work on the battle of Midway. A remarkable work of richly detailed scholarship so skillfully written as to read like a novel.
This is the best work of history I am likely to read in this lifetime...and, yes, I have read Shelby Foote's excellent three-volumes on the Civil War, twice.
This is a story many of us think we know, but trust me, until you read this, you almost certainly don't.
