I want to add an AIS tracker to my web site for visitors to track where we are. Right now I personally use Marinetraffic.com.

Anyone have something better, or that they like?

I prefer vessel finder.

https://www.vesselfinder.com

However, I think Delorme, which is satellite based is a better choice for family and friends tracking vessels, as AIS relies on VHF signals and terrestrial receiving stations.

As implied above, marinetraffic.com relies on land based receiving stations. It works near most of the larger cities but if there is no receiving station within range, your boat won't show up.

Since I don't transmit AIS data, my solution is to write a little "blog" of the day's activities and location and put it on Facebook. Sometimes I'll put a marker on Google Earth and post a screen shot.

Not quite as sophisticated as your plan but it works for me.

BTW: Since I don't want the local thieves and drug dealers to know I'm 500 miles from home, I send this information to a select group on Facebook.

There are a number of web sites that provide information from a network of shore-based AIS receivers, mostly around large ports. Many, if not most, areas are not covered by any receivers.

To make matters worse, each network is independent, and only displays vessels within range of their own receivers. So the site that works great in one area may not work at all elsewhere.

We went with the InReach. The satellite network works everywhere and it allows 2-way text when out of cell phone range.

I use Boatbeacon, on my phone. Similar to Marine Traffic, but when I have used the latter, it hasn't shown vessels I can see going by my home, until they are well past, whereas BB has them right when I see them.

I would recommend Delorme InReach.
I went with SPOT. I would NOT recommend it.

Our SPOT Trace unit stops transmitting everytime we slow too much for a bridge opening or to transit a lock. SPOT customer service has been dismal and our hardware was replaced once.

Both SPOT and Delorme InReach can be connected to your Active Captain account if you use it. Then you appear to your boating friends on AC.
