32' boat just went down off Comox

We heard the radio call of a power boat that lost power and taking on water- less that 5 min later the vessel was down and 2 persons recovered alive.

Boat was headed from Comix to Lund with farming supplies-per the skipper, it was a bit overloaded...

Love the fact that response from boaters in the area was immediate!

We were listening to the same call. A bit sketchy for a bit there.

What struck me was that the captain issued a Pan Pan saying that he lost power and was taking on water and gave his position. Then we heard nothing until the report from the boat that responded and pulled the two crew out of the water. The captain sounded incredibly calm for a guy whose vessel was sinking. My guess is that the problem was worse than he initially thought or he would have issued a Mayday.

Perhaps there is more to the story...one guy wearing a dry suit, but they were headed to Lund to drop off farm supplies?

One must wonder...

In BC it is common that work and equipment carrying boats are manned by one with a dry suit for that one person. Wonder if the person wearing the dry suit was the wife or youngster.

That makes sense. Bottom line, I'm glad that the 2 men are ok- a boat can be replaced.

This was two men in an oyster skiff, loaded with oyster farm gear that just took on water. Too much water. The two in dry suits were pulled from the water by a private vessel, transferred to a CG craft and returned to Comox.No drama. A day in the life of commercial boys.

Thanks to the vessel of opportunity that still believes it's ok to be a good sam.

Two days earlier, a family of 5 were aboard a 50 foot wood boat they had bought just hours before. They had just departed Comox, were headed to Tofino on the west side of Vancouver Island.

According to the previous owner, the boat had a tendency to allow a minor ingress of water. It did. Bilge pumps burned out and you know the rest. These folks were picked off the stern of the sinking boat by RCM-SAR, transferred to CG and also taken back to Comox. Drama. A day in the life of rec. boaters.

Thanks to volunteer SAR from Station 59– Deep Bay, who continue to recue people from themselves.

Both boats disappeared and no medical attention needed in either case.
