Pairadice and ASD Alaska Adventure 2017

The friendliest place on the web for anyone who enjoys boating.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Guests are coming onboard soon and we have decided to get out of Ketch asap. A storm is coming in tomorrow and if we get into Behm Canal this afternoon we can get ahead of the weather. 20 plus knots and snotty seas tomorrow and Sunday in Revillagigedo channel. IF we dont leave Ketch today, we are stuck here till Monday.
Be back with an update in 5 days.
Cheers!

Smart move John, This appears to be a late hit forecast. The Canadian has it hitting there late this afternoon which means between 2100 hr and 2400 hrs to here. Up Behm you will be comfortable, You may have departed as I type, if not, which end first? North or South?
Have a grand excursion.

"A good time to keep your mouth shut is when you're in deep water":banghead::banghead:

Should have recalled this a bit sooner, however, in liu I DO in fact have a carton of Klondike Bars in the freezer and the beer place is just down the road. As the two "Jones Boys" and crew are going around the island the chance of heeding what you suggest is one to prepare with could be a fact.:whistling:

We are back in Ketch. The tour of Misty Fjords is over we had rain, fog and a bistering 74f days!! My daughter was awesome.....

Probably good thing you had your daughter and "One Winged" wife on board able to raise the anchor by hand to the "Sea Chanty" cadance Retired Navy Chief John hallorded from the stern of the Pairadice as you and he drank Alaska's best beer.
Just a guess here, just a guess:lol::rofl::D

John,Tom and crews, Okay, here is the low down on the Blue Berry Festival. It starts on Friday. Here is the full site of events. It is an annual event that has been around for many years, over 15 for sure.
Lots of arts and farts involved. Great times for the ladies, however, John, Tom, not so sure unless you enjoy a liberal zoo. More for kids, ladies,:thumb: and girly men:blush: type of outing .

Thanks Al! You must have been hiding in the grass when John and I were barking commands on raising the chain and anchor!!! New windlass on the way from Defender. Should be here Tuesday or Wednesday.

Thanks for the festival. Be my luck and Morning Star would be in attendance...

After a windlass failure and manual retrieve, we keep a pair of leather faced gardening gloves on board. Two pairs would be better, for a team chain retrieve.

How did you get the anchor and chain hauled back in? Were you able to do it by hand? Or does your windless have some sort of manual crank lever? This is one failure I dread since it could easily be a 500lb lift, and hence impossible to do by hand. Our maxwell windless has a manual retrieval lever, but reports from people who have had to use it is that its a real bear.

I have been privy to Tom's situation on his windless I expect he will respond in time.

However Twistedtree, you concern I think is common. While I do not have such a issue being in the small boat category , still I often wondered on the event. As in Tom's case exceptions pop up and it is those that make the concern relative. Will there be comments outlining various jury rigged solutions created with "McGiver" fixes.
Would be interesting and worthy of the onboard "What For" file.

Well, I ended up pulling, by hand the last 40 feet of chain and the 77lb Rocna. When It first failed (stopped) I got the manual handle out to raise it the rest of the way. It broke! The handle breaking was my fault as it was in a storage place and I never used it, so it was rusted.

After I got the chain and anchor on board, I took 3 Advil. Then I had to pull 600ft of leaded shrimp pot line! We did have shrimp. (Next year I will have a pot puller!)

New Windlass on the way from Defender. The old windlass is a maxwell-nillsson V1000. The new windlass is a VWC 1000. Defender not only had it on the shelf, it was on sale! Delivery and shipping to Ketchikan is $2250. Will be here on Tuesday afternoon.

This is something that I haven't given adaquate thought to. Can I raise my anchor if the windlass fails?

300' of my chain is roughly 350# air weight. Add a 60# anchor and it is now over 400#. That 400# is what, about 350# in salt water?

If I am in 40' of water and can have my crew hold us above the anchor, then I only have to lift 50' of chain at a time. That would be a bit less that 60# air weight or about 53# to lift out of the water (assuming 10' from my hands to the surface).

Raising 53# for 250' before I get to the anchor and add another 55# would be tough for this old guy.

It's all worth thinking through. Not so bad with 5/16" chain and a 50lb anchor. Harder with 3/8" and a 75lb anchor. Impossible with 1/2" and a 175lb anchor.

Use your dinghy davit, takes awhile but your just pressing a button.
Hoist tie it off rehook, lift again etc etc.

I always imagine having 250' out when it happens. Most windlasses either come with or you can purchase separately handles/gypsy's and, if needed, drums, to allow manual retrieval. Still not an easy task. Without it, very very difficult task.

Here is one thought outside of the box:thumb:- Good:flowers:

Yup,
Bigger is better falls apart when the winch stops. And if you're anchored deep it's doubble drouble w chain.

We had the same model windless fail, turned out there is a roll pin on the shaft that will shear under load.... It's relatively easy to fix, it just breaks at an inconvenient time. To pull the anchor we carry a come-along, stores easy and has other uses.

I need to figure out how to use TF while I am in Alaska. I do not have internet at our cabin. I have a cabin in Coffman Cove and saw you tied up to the dock along with I think Pair-of Dice. I keep my boat there in the harbor. I have always wanted to wander over and chat with the boats that come in but just don't want to invade on their privacy.

Posting again to push the Korean trolls of the lists.

But I have to say, why are you replacing a 29 yo windlass? My Ideal Windlass is 29 yo as well. So I recently put in thrust bearings on the main shaft and motor and its good to go. Well, about 80%. Things is, despite the buy-out of Ideal by Schaefer Marine laste last year, all parts for my Ideal ACW are still available! Really impressed with Schaefer that they are maintaining the Ideal reputation!

Mike,
Should have come over and said hi, we have met a number of TFers on this trip and you could have been added to the list. At the least, scored a beer and listen to us tell lies!

Cheers

May the old Maxwell-Nelsson rest in peace. New one arrives Monday afternoon. 20170805_103646.jpg

So while we are waiting on parts might as well continue the mission of killing fish. John couldn't keep rock fish of his hook. I vaught a nice coho. Nice day on the water.

Thats a great plan for next year. We are usually at the cabin for the entire month of July. If anyone makes our way next year send me a message. We can have you over to the cabin for a beer or two on the beach.
