Mooring between Daytona and Hilton Head

Fernandina on Amelia Island has some mooring balls. Good location. Of course, St. Augustine has 3 mooring fields. Those are the only ones I know of in that area. There are plenty of places to anchor.

It's beyond Hilton Head, but just curious, did Beaufort SC ever install the moorings they were planning last summer?

The Mooring field in Beaufort SC should be done by now. It is only about 25 miles up the ICW from Hilton Head. Great little town!

Yes, I got the same story. We have anchored there several times, it's one place where having a mooring field would be a big plus. I asked because there is nothing on their web site or anywhere else I searched about it being actually installed. I'll call tomorrow and see what I can find out.

Gotta give my vote to St Augustine and Beaufort, SC for that area
You just passed through there recently, didn't you? Did you see if the mooring field was in place?

I was at the Down Town Marina in Beaufort last week and did not see a mooring field. There were maybe 12 boats randomly anchored or on mooring balls, but I don't think they were public and I never saw a water taxi if that was planned.
I'm assuming the mooring field was going in just south of downtown?

You have to stop at Jekyl's Island just to see where the end of the USA was planned.
Just curious - You prefer mooring to what? A marina slip? Anchoring?
Mooring fields are pretty rare in that area but there are plenty of marinas with transient slips. There are also plenty of good ancorages.

I was outside passing Beaufort, SC so I can't say. I can't think of any mooring fields north of FL and south of Annapolis. Millions of great anchorages though.

South of Daytona around Ponce Inlet are plenty of places to anchor off of the main channels. Right behind Disappearing Island is a quiet spot where many folks anchor off and is within easy distance to a couple of restaurants, etc by dinghy.

There is a new mooring field at Carolina Beach, and some mooring balls opposite the Charleston City Marina. I don't know if the ones in Charleston are for transients.
One of the nicest and best sheltered mooring fields is south of Daytona at Vero Beach. Moorings are great because you don't have to worry about someone anchoring too close to you.

The Charleston moorings are private, like the ones off Georgetown SC and Beaufort NC, and the few at Beaufort SC. Not sure what the implications are of picking any of them up if empty; many places in the Northeast it is OK but you have to move if owner shows up; you have to know the local custom ahead of time.
One thing you don't know (especially us) is if the "unregulated" mooring is stout enough for your boat. Heck, I had the painter break off in my hand at Vero Beach once on a so-called "big boat" mooring (most at Vero are designed to raft three boats), and I am not that strong! We subsequently ran our own line right to chain. Also, it my not be obvious on a private mooring how it is rigged. There are many many variations. I like to be able to discuss all that with the harbormaster before hand.

The last time I talked with the harbormaster at Vero Beach he said that they had recently upgraded the moorings. I believe it was $13 plus ta a night. That includes use of the dinghy dock, showers, laundry, and computer in the lounge. The free shuttle bus to town and the beach stops on the marina grounds.. A very good deal. Yes, you can expect to be rafted in the high season. I plan to be there for a few days in the latter part of February. I'll check the moorings out and report back.

I was anchored in Beaufort last week. The mooring field is currenly private. There are plans to change this but it has not been made yet. There is a city dock that is free for the day but you must be gone by 1:00 am. If you anchor in Beaufort, be sure you have plenty of scope because the currents are really strong there.
