The owner of the boat I am delivering to Lake Michigan from the Gulf Coast got the bright idea of emailng the River Gages folks about the question of potential currents. His response is below:

The general rule of thumb we use is based upon the St. Louis gage height:

St. Louis greater than 30 ft:
Straight Reaches ~ 5.5-6.5 ft/s (3.7-4.4 mph)
Bendway Reaches ~ 8.5-9.5 ft/s (5.8-6.5 mph)

St. Louis at 15 ft:
Straight Reaches ~ 5.0 ft/s (3.4 mph)
Bendway Reaches ~ 7.0 ft/s (4.8 mph)

St. Louis less than 5 ft:
Straight Reaches ~ 3.5-4.5 ft/s (2.4-3.1 mph)
Bendway Reaches ~ 4.5-6.5 ft/s (3.1-4.4 mph)
