We have a new-to-us 1984 Californian 43 with 7.4L Crusaders that we are bringing back to its original grandeur. The port engine is dead (seized solid) and needs replacement.
Has anyone got experience with changing out an engine on this model boat, and can you share any lessons learned?
We are especially curious as to how the engine comes out of the salon.

Thanks in advance,
Rick P

I haven’t done one on that exact model, I have done quite a few aft cabins. The DYI method, pull the engine up into the saloon. Remove exhaust headers and heads. Use 2x4s to make a level skid rail out through the back door. Use a comealong to skid it onto the back deck. Use a forklift to remove it off the back deck, or take out the side window if it’s tall enough.

Quick update

To catch everyone up: we are replacing the dead Crusaders with MerCruiser 6.8 Magnum. They were an exact fit in all respects, mating up to our rebuilt Warner trannies perfectly. Work is being done by Action Master - they're super!
The load path was through the fly bridge deck, ultimately an 8' by 8' cut. The size of the cut came from chasing core rot, though. i'll post details of that repair later on.
It's been terrific having access to the engine room nooks and crannies to be able to clean and paint; getting rid of 35+ years of crud, corruption, and filth been its own reward. Rewiring, plumbing and general modernization has been expensive, but worth it.
Best to all,
Rick
