Awlgrip match to 1980 Californian 34 gelcoat

I'm painting out some of the small tedious teak trim on my Californian and looking to see if anyone knows the closest Awlgrip color match to the original gelcoat. Thanks!

Greetings,
Mr. AR. Get yourself an Awlgrip color chart and you can make your own bad choice. A few years in any strong sun and the "original" color is no longer.

Another alternative is to get a commercial coatings supplier like Finishmaster to come out and take a "picture" of what you have, and mix the exact duplicate. In many markets they will send someone by when convenient for them on a small order. Some body shops may do it as well. Doesn't necessarily have to be Awlgrip either.

I used Interlux Brightside in Hatteras Off-white to touch up around some hatches that I repaired. Our boat is a 1984 Californian 34. Color chart & lots of squinting & mumbling
will probably get you close enough for boat work.

Gelcoat color

Howdy,

The gelcoat on a boat this old will be difficult to match.
If you can remove a piece and go to any good automotive paint shop, they can get you a close match.

Or, you can just Awlgrip your whole boat like we did on our '79 Hula Girl in Dana.... Matterhorn White looks "clean"...

Best,
Bro

Hey Bro....did you apply the Awlgrip yourself using the roll/tipping method or did you have the job sprayed? Nice looking boat Bro.

Hi,

It was rolled and tipped with brushing catalyst.
Had it done in the LA area. I have done it to 2 boats in the past.
This one, I had done and supervised....

Bro, I've got a similar vintage (1977) Marshall Californian and have been considering changing the window trim and outer lower door panels to white for an updated and lower maintenance look. The later Californians have the white door panels and look pretty good. I'd retain the wood finish for the interior since I have no white panels inside my boat and enjoy the wood tones.

Do I see painted door panels on your boat? Mine are delaminated slightly in the lower corners. Have you seen this also?

Nice looking 34! Got some more pics to show?

Hi Al,
When I got this boat 2.5 years ago, it had the window casings painted out. I think he used single poly, and it was already looking tired. The whole front gelcoat around the front window was badly cracked and we had to fill/fair out around the windows. Then it got one or two coats of hi build primer on the entire boat depending on how good the surface was. Then 2 coats of Awlgrip topcoat.
But the doors I left clear, but I tried Awlgrip 2 part clear over the existing surface. I am hearing 2 years plus in direct sun with no recoating needed. I'll report back next year on that!!
IF you are going to paint out the doors, make sure you get the bad areas well sealed with west. You may want to consider rolling a coat or 2 of west epoxy on the surface before priming. This is call barrier coating. If you have seen a woodie with "blisters" it is because it was either not dry, or the moisture is "wicking" through and getting underneath the LP surface. Done properly, it will look like glass, and stay that way.
And of coarse canvas over these doors is a must, especially on brightwork.

Best,
Bro
