Possibly. If the membrane is still good, you would need to dial back the high pressure. If the system is rated to say 20 gph output in salt water, that is what you want the output to be in fresh or brackish water. In order to get that, the high pressure to the membrane has to be reduced or you will/may damage it. If you want to run it long term in fresh water, I would get a hold of the manufacturer. There are membranes out there that are designed specifically for fresh water.

Yes it will make clean soft water from river water, but only for a few hours. Then the inlet pre-filters will clog and it will shutdown.

You will need to check whether or not it is a fully automatic system. For example has it been set to flush every seven or ten days while not being used, meaning it does not have to be pickled?

I make fresh water out of silty river water all winter long. The trick is a couple washable filters, 20 & 5 micron, after the raw water pump and before the pressure pump as LarryM said. You do have to turn down the pressure. If you know your membrane, you can look it up online.
You can buy membranes for fresh water or brackish water, but the salt water membrane will do. At one time I had all 3, but decided the salt water ones were fine and saved a lot of pickling.

As I wrote before I know nothing about this system so will send serial number to HRO and get the manual, as no plans to got to sea in the near future the ability to get good water from rivers or lakes is what interests me most. If working well Just how good is the water it produces.

Ours tests better to the point that my wife won’t allow anything else in the tank. She has very long hair and loves the way it makes her hair feel. We also make clear ice and have spot free surfaces when we wash with it. Once in awhile my wife invites the girls over for a spa day on the boat.
How are you going to power it?
If it needs a new membrane, likely, they should be pickled annually whether they are used or not, add that to the mix.
With the potential cost and effort of getting this up and running, a good multi stage filtration system may serve your needs just as well since all you are wanting to do is clean up fresh water.

Yes I think your right as the more I learn the more complicated this start up becomes.
