TF slow today

Trawler Forum is painfully slow today. Yahoo and FB are fine.

Dreary skies outside can make everything seem slow. Do you have any Concrete snow yet?

Tom,

I think I would hear that!

Concrete is a good solid community but not THAT SOLID!

Dreary? Very nice compared to Thorne Bay this time of the year. Worked on Willy yesterday in the rain but the rain was light and everything was not very wet. No wind. A pleasant day indeed. Not supposed to be quite so nice today. Going to the hard town today.

Computer speed seems normal now.

I know I've said this before but for the last 4 or 5 days TF has been very slow again. Only TF. When I click "post message" I can go get another cup of coffee and visit w Chris for a few minutes before I get anywhere on TF. And I'm NOT in Alaska anymore.

Seems to be working fine down here. Maybe the bits are having a hard time getting up the hill to Concrete.

Eric,

Sorry about the issues you are having. Next time the site is that slow, please run a traceroute. You can see more on how to this here:
How to Use the Traceroute Command

Please copy/paste the output here and we can analyze it to see if it's a network issue between your ISP and our server.

Andy,
Thanks for the reply. It's slow clicking on TF or a thread but frequently OK on "lesser" clicks.

I'm a D class student of the web world and I don't have Windows. Have a newer i-mac w Snow Leopard. I just discovered that I have a "spam" box w 114 spam messages in it. I've never "cleaned my computer out" and not sure I have the skills to do it.

Perhaps I should try Foxfire. I have that option but usually use Safari as I like the bookmark and history features.

I'm surprised that you would assume I had Windows.

The slowness has not gone away.

Try Google Chrome for a browser on the Mac. It is all I ever use now out of all the browsers I have.

Eric --- The problem you are describing sounds like a slow server to me. Either because there are too many computers trying to access it and the server's hardware can't keep up or it's just a slow system.

I use an iPad 2 with the latest iOS. The TF mobile app does not function correctly with latest iPad iOS but the administrators know this. However I almost always access TF on the iPad using Safari and the regular TF website. It works fine and very fast using either wifi or AT&T 3G.

Our home computer is a MacBook with Snow Leopard. I use Firefox for most web access although I also use Safari and Google Chrome. Safari is the most "quirky" and is the one most likely to hang up, be slow, or simply not perform well with some sites. Which is odd because the Safari on my iPad performs flawlessly with everything I do with it.

Of the three search engines on the MacBook, Chrome is the most dependable, followed by Firefox, with Safari a distant third.

At home we have an Earthlink DSL connection and a wireless router although the computer is "hard wired" to the DSL line through the router. Access to websites on all three search engines is very fast.

I wanted more than one web searcher on the iPad as there are times I want to look up something without backing out of the site I was on with Safari. So I installed Mercury, which from the appearance of its logo may be associated with the Firefox people. It has performed very well so far.

Thanks Marin you're so right about Firefox. The image is HUGE. And there seems to be quite good response too. Thank's again but I still wonder what has changed.

I like Safari's "Top Sites" feature and other similar stuff. Is there an equivalent feature on FireFox ?

Perhaps your ISP has changed equipment or software or has experienced a problem and the workaround is slower or any one of a number of things that could be going on with them.

I haven't explored all the features of Firefox or Chrome so can't answer your question about features equivalent to Top Sites.

All the sites I frequent are on the bookmarks bar across the top of the screens on all the search engines I use so I've had no reason to do any more than that. The bookmarks bar can hold more than the sites that are visible and it's just a screen tap/mouse click to see the rest of them instantly.

Rochepoint,
Thanks for the link to Chrome.

Marin, Rochepoint,
I'm on Fire Fox now and to get the bookmarks bar I need to click on it at the very top. If I do it disappears. It almost seems like I've got a PC again.

Spent some time downloading Chrome but I can't get logged in as I had a Google Accnt several years ago and can't remember the password and am in doubt about the username. Tried about 15 sets of those distorted figures to copy and they rejected ALL my answers even though I was positive I had 4 or 5 of them unquestionably right. Why would they do that! Was getting late and I got disgusted and went to bed.

I sure like this Fire Fox though.

I think I remember my old username now so I'll give it another try.

I use Chrome but I don't log into my google account, just use the browser.

Marin
Thanks for the reminder about another browser for IPad, in looking around found that Google has released Chrome for it now, works great!
Thanks.

OK GOOD

I figured out my pass word and reestablished my Google account.

And I imported my favorites from Safari and did a lot of editing.

Thanks everybody I now have options and am way ahead of where I was. The only downside to the bookmarks bar over the "top sites" on Safari is that I've got to read the bookmarks whereas w top sites a glance is all that's necessary. But in time (as I remember from my PC days) I'll know the position of most all the bookmarks.

rochepoint,
For the last 3 weeks or so I've been using Chrome, FoxFire and Safari. I can't tell any difference but I haven't tried any controlled experiments or other serious evaluation. I continue to find Safari's "top sites" feature easier to use but I like FireFox's Bookmarks bar and Chrome seems to be very good too. Thanks.

CP ... my computer's Apple not me ... but I like apples.
