Identification issue

Could someone please identify the item (coupling,
bearings??) situated along drive shaft about 3 ft behind the transmission on a Cummins 3208?? Is it normal for the fitting to leak a little water?

The reflected part was confusing me until I saw the 2nd picture.

The part that passes the shaft through the hull is the shaft log and then the assembly just forward of that is the packing gland. Yours is different than mine so I won't pretend to be an expert. Some dripping when the shaft is turning is normal. The packing nut is usually adjusted so that there is no dripping when the shaft isn't turning. (Yours isn't a packing nut, so not sure what it's called.) That hose may indicate it's a 'dripless' type so not supposed to normally drip.

Someone with more experience with your hardware will come along soon.

Methinks a stuffing box that drips, and behind a 3208??? Cummins just could just be someone having us on, not even April 1st.

It’s a very normal stuffing box attached to a very abnormal Cummins. A slow drip while in use would be normal. If dripping while stationary some tightening is recommended. Just turn the nuts on both sides the same amount.

When turning the nuts to tighten I turn them 1 wrench flat at a time, in other words 1/6 of a turn at a time. Run for a while and re check. I want a slow drip and cool running. If that means a very slow drip when not running I'm OK with that.
