RE: Alternatives to DeFever 49

Susan and Dan,* I agree about the Sea Ranger.* I remember when I first got interested in trawlers a decade ago I bought Ed McKnew's Powerboat Guide and pored over the layouts and found that the Sea Ranger was very similar to the DF 49.* But they seem few and far between for sure.*

Ken, Did you view the MT49 that is on YW shown as being in Panama City? How did she look? I have been watching that boat online for like 2+ years. Teak decks scare me off though I like the MT49 layout. I think I like the MT50 layout better though.

Alternatives to DeFever 49

Tony,

I've got to say I like the pilothouse on the MT much more then the DF 49. The DF49 house and the boat in general is a bit cramped to me. However the build quality on the MT vs DF is no comparison, having just had both I should know. The core cross-section on the DF is massive! The DF is built like a true tank. I was burying my 8' bow in some waves two weeks ago and nothing flinched. I really like that huge dinette and watch berth in the MT. Rip off the deck and glass, as you know it's no big deal. I'm getting ready to pull off my side and aft decks.

RE: Alternatives to DeFever 49

Woodsong,*

The MT49 in Panama City is owned by a gentleman named Manuel.* I live in Atlanta and it turned out that he owned a Mercedes dealership in NorthWest Atlanta for 30 years and is now retired.* He doesn't live on the boat but does live near by in Panama City so he's on the boat a fair bit and takes good care of her.* He has owned several large boats and seemed knowledgeable.*

She seemed in pretty good shape although the upper helm is in need of some TLC.** Although his wife is petite he's a rather large guy so I don't think he gets up there much perhaps because of the vertical ladder you have to climb and then crawl through the hatch in the boat deck.**

That pilothouse settee really is huge (it's a big 'C' shape in white leather) so*all he had in the small salon was a short loveseat along the port side while on the starboard side he had built in a cabinet with a halfsize fridge.* Looked like he spent all his time in the pilothouse.**

Engine access was through the salon sole.* The interior woodwork was Taiwan typical with interesting reliefs carved into the stateroom doors.

The most curious thing for me (and I know nothing) was that the teak decks looked like the rest of the brightwork as he had them stained and varnished rather than let them go grey as I see on almost all other boats of this vintage.**

Thanks Ken-
we live in ATL as well (near Marietta). I think that particular MT49 is priced too high but appreciate your input on it.

One boat that we toured at the FLIBS that has many of the DF49 features but you have* to buy new was the Selene 45.* They have an interesting layout as you descend from the salon/galley level*to the lower deck.* Rather than a passageway with staterooms along the way it has a square landing with staterooms, engine room, heads radiating from the landing.

Ken**
*Ken.....I was also aboard that boat at Ft. Laud. and was quite impressed by that layout. *When I read your first description on the thread, I thought "I hope he got to see the Selene at the show". *Kevin, the sales guy, could hardly contain himself. *It was a good tour of a good boat, and even looks a bit like the 49 DeFever with its raised pilothouse.

**For the buck, I wouldn't leave out the Hatteras 42 and 48 LRC's. *Rock solid, and very capable boats. *The layout on the 53 and 58 Hatt MY's are very nice also. *Every boat is a compromise.

RE: Alternatives to DeFever 49

Healhustler,

Those Hats are others that I would certainly consider.* Like the DFs they sure do hold their value.*

So now I've got some good DF 49 alternatives going;

- MT 49, Bayliner 47, Sea Ranger 47,*DF 48, *Hat LRC

This really helps because it opens up the price ranges significantly along with overall selection.

Thanks!* Ken

RE: Alternatives to DeFever 49

A friend of mine owns a Hatteras LRC, That is one large, stout, 48' boat.

I love our 4788, but if a nice LRC would have been For Sale on the west coast, we would have looked closely at it.

Daddyo: This was my brother's boat. He is deceased now and I have been trying to confirm the length of his boat. My memory says that it was a 53, stretched (cockpit) to a 57. is that reasonable? It was powered by 2-375 Cats and cruised at 10 knots. We spent many a great outing in the Sea of Cortez on the "Arizona."

Sorry, but this is the only pic that I have and it was taken of a painting.

No, too many port lights in the hull and the Arizona had a blue canvas bimini.

I doubt the artist's port count was spot on. It's the other side of the boat. Mine isn't symmetrical (4 and 3). Canvas can be changed but either way your right it was a 57

Here is an advertisement for the 57 POC back when they were new. This was in the November 1986 issue of MotorBoating & Sailing.

Actually, I think Walt's brothers boat was the DeFever 57' Yachtfisher. It was based on the DeFever 53' POC with a cockpit added on the rear. In the picture Walt posted you can see the cockpit. The DeFever 57 POC has a flush deck and no cockpit. The Power Boat Guide says that only about 6 of the 57' Yachtfishers were built between 1986 and 1989. What year was your brother's boat Walt?

Daddyo, I understand you have a PhD in Defever - how well do you know the Seahorse 52? I really like the Defever 49 RPH, but they all seem to be on the wrong side of the World for me! Many thanks in advance.
