Complete hijack,

The tread title is.......Nordy knocked down to 69*

Obviously the * is supposed to represent degrees.I have never been able to find a degree symbol on my lap top either.

Is there one?

"on a stabilized boat no less"...
Sorry, but I have to stop lurking and chime in: stabilizers and hydrostatic stability - the physics that keeps you upright - have almost nothing to do with each other. Horribly common misconception.

By 'almost nothing,' I mean the only way they're related is if you're referring to ballast, which heavy gyroscopes can also serve as.

Stabilizers keep you a bit more comfortable up until you capsize, but they do nothing to prevent it. You could in fact argue the opposite, since they probably lull people into traveling in sea states that would otherwise be viewed as too rough.

May be the same on a PC.

I get ° with alt-0176 on a PC but alt-167 produces the same. For some reason I memorized some 4-digit alt-codes for when I wrote reports. It does seem the easier way would be the shorter codes. Alt-1 is ☺ (smiley), etc.
There's a quick list at http://www.alt-codes.net/

On PC it's alt 248, putting the letter or number you want to add the wee 0 or degree sign to immediately before that. How do I know? - use it a lot at work, as in medicine a lot of things are secondary to, (abbreviated as 2º to) -- hey thanks harbour950, I had forgotten option o did that on a Mac - and I use one at home all the time.

By the way for those feeling in the cold, today it reached 36ºC here, (about 100ºF) - horrible. Thank God for aircon.

Yes, thanks Harbor 950. I'll try and remember.

Pete, another hot day forecast for tomorrow plus morning showers and afternoon storm. So I think it will be Friday before I get to the 2nd Cricket Test. Then depending on where the game is at, perhaps go again at the weekend. India played well today, our guys have a big task ahead of them.

There's a quick list at Alt Codes List of Alt Key Codes Symbols

Alt 0176 is a Raster - ░ -
Alt 0248 is part of the Number symbol - ° - as in N°:
Alt 0167 is the Degrees symbol - º -

On a Laptop this only works with [NumLk] ON and the Code should be typed on the Numeric keys - [M] → [0], [J] [K] [L] → [1] [2] [3], [U] [I] [O] → [4] [5] [6], [7] [8] [9] → [7] [8] [9]

The leading zero matters on my PC. Using the number pad...
Alt 0176 is °, Alt 176 is ░
Alt 0248 is ø, Alt 248 is °
Alt 0167 is §, Alt 167 is º

All this time I've been using the wrong symbol, the masculine ordinal indicator (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ordinal_indicator if you have too much spare time), as in 32°F instead of the degree symbol, as in 32ºF. Who knew? I shall go and hang my head in shame.

Peter,
I have left Tidahapah in Hobart as I go back to work on the 24 th Dec.
2 weeks at home have to get a boat / fishing fix some how. So the little boat will be on the trailer and off I go. May just fish out of Mooloolaba , it is all weather dependent.
Hervey Bay is only a 4 hr drive.
Cheers
Benn

The January edition of Passagemaker has some comments on page 16 by James on the knockdown. Of interest to me is the water intake via the air intake grill, an issue I made some efforts to deal with on my 1981 design boat. I would have expected a modern Nordhavn to be better thought out......

Look at where the intake grills are on the Nordhavn and see if you think the possibility would be great of water ingress .. its not low on the side decks like a lot of the typical trawlers. This is the only time I have ever heard of this happening on a Nordhavn.

I know James has a lot of miles under their keel but they may have survived the event in better shape than most other boats. I think the "call of the dock" may have been a bigger factor. The most prudent skipper may take a chance they would normally not.. most survive.. some don't.
I have been in that same spot a few times and haven't been bit. This is by no means a judgement on their decision to enter when they did.. and I really applaud his decision to write about the event so others may learn.

;-)

Kinda like 4-wheel drive getting you stuck in deeper mud than 2-wheel drive?

I thought hard before making this bump of old news, but felt it worthwhile.

James recently moved his blog to a new host, and now his in-depth posts/articles are easy to find. I think the write up in the link below of the knock-down is a lot more informative than the initial link I posted, or for that matter the mag. article. 69.1 degrees | MV Dirona

While serving aboard the USS Siapan, a CVL, we were on the flight deck putting double tiedowns on the aircraft when (as I learned later) we took a 26 degree roll. I was outboard on the deck edge of the outboard aircraft and remember holding onto the wheel strut to keep from falling overboard. Scarier! Can't imagine 69 degrees!
