Could be.....My 16 yr old (1800 hr) TAMD-41 Volvo has been perfect. Same engine used in every Camano 31 over the years. I expect it to outlast me.... For every horror story, there's a counter. Volvo diesels with IPS drives seem to be the preferred units on many of today's high end boats...

I said too much as I hate this Volvo bashing thing that never ends. To say thereís nothing to it would be naive but itís the kind of stuff that we donít need here. Bashing the Bruce anchor seems to have died down and thatís good. But this Volvo thing just has nine lives.

Last post from me on this topic.
I agree with you about product bashing, especially when the basher is just repeating "what they have heard" and don't even have experience with said product.

However, I was not "Volvo bashing". As I stated earlier, I thought it was OK to voice my personal opinion about changes at Nordic Tug, one of which was the switch to Volvo engines. I added some background factual information regarding why I, personally would not purchase a Volvo Penta again. Not trying to say anything beyond that. Not bashing the brand per se, just relaying my personal experiences (and trying to remain fair in what I presented).

While I have seen my fair share of marine engines that have not been even close to properly maintained, and so for the most part would agree with you, in the individual case of my Volvo failure that would not be the case. I followed the Owner's manual recommendations and maintenance to the letter. Never once started the engine without first doing all pre-start checks. Never ran more than 100 hours before oil changes, and used the correct oil and Volvo brand filter. However, a metallurgical engineer who examined the engine after the failure stated: "100% the nut that backed off and let go causing the complete lower end failure was never torqued correctly from the factory". My actions (or lack thereof) could not have caused that!
Also for the record, I was the only owner of that engine from new, so I knew all maintenance history (the engine was less than 4 years old at the time). Again, so as not to be misunderstood, I am not saying that because of my particular engine all Volvo's are bad. I am just saying with full confidence that in this case the problem was their's, and due to that, and mostly how they handled the situation, I would not buy another. Sorry if that offends anyone, but it seems perfectly reasonable to me.

The way I understand it, the reason for going with Volvo is a financial decision. Volvo allows Nordic to pay for the engine when they sell the boat, Cummins, or anyone else, wants to be paid when they order the engine. Don't know how true this is, but it would make sense.

I saw a small aluminum box with a few electrical components in it, figure it out and Allied Ellectronics could sell u the parts for likely less $10. The Volvo folks wanted $750. Truly the Westerbeke of Sweden!

My Volvo MD2030, I mean green painted Perkins, or better yet Ishikawajima Shibaura Machinery diesel has been rock solid. She's never given me a problem and the MD2030 has a pretty good reputation. I do most of the mechanical work and have never had a problem finding parts (I've even used parts for the Perkins Perama M30).

Huh, What?....Not going to find many happy customers with the IPS drives that I have heard of. Lots of complaints.

Regarding the IPS drives, that is whole new subject. The first gen gear that started coming out around 10 to 15 years ago was not very good. Don't take my word for it. Do a search on an Express Cruiser website and see what others have to say. The newer gear (last 5 years or so) is much more reliable but you are still relying on a lot of electronics playing nicely together, and if they don't, you are down. The drive service is annual, and its a haul out to do it and you hope they don't find anything bad such as a blown seal on the lower unit. Good reasons to have a prop, and a shaft.

The solution is obvious.Stop doing it. Leave it parked/change engines/change boats..lots of alternatives.The incessant complaints have changed nothing.

The failure was caused when one of the 2 nuts used to connect the con rod to the crankshaft totally backed off (cylinder #1 closest to the oil pump) and allowed the con rod to pound the crap out of the crankshaft. The report from the metallurgical engineer stated that in his professional opinion, this one nut (out of 6) was never torqued properly. On this engine model, they rely totally on torque to "hold it together", there are no retaining clips (or other such devices).
