Are Krogen Manatees Truckable?

Looking at a Manatee in TX. Don't think I'm going to have time to cruise it to MD. So I'm wondering if they are truckable? I know the length and the beam are OK, just not sure about the height. Anyone have experience with this?

I have no experience with this but it seems easy enough. Find a reputable*carrier, provide them with the dimensions, the starting point*and the destination and they should be able to tell you if it's going to be possible or not. Bridge clearances would be the biggest obstacle, I would think.

I wonder how costs compare between trucking and one of those transport ships.

RE: Are Krogen Manatees Truckable?

i think that the fly bridge will have to come off to truck it?? as far as a transport boat some of them can not pick up a boat in the states and deliver it to another port in the states. being a delivery captain that is what i found out not to long ago?

RE: Are Krogen Manatees Truckable?

It's a long way, but there's a guy right here on the forum that just brought one from LA to Clearwater, FL. That same guy would probably do it to FL, maybe through Occachobee to Stuart, and there's a host of other captains there that deliver Krogens up the coast. Trucking a Manatee is no problem with the windshield and hardtop off, but ya know....i'd want her cradled like a baby, which she is. The cost must be close, but of course, the trip time is not. Good luck.

RE: Are Krogen Manatees Truckable?

We had our GB36 trucked from California to Washington in 1998. The transport company (I believe we used Associated) uses special lowboy trailers that drop the forefoot of the boat almost to the pavement. Because of this the flying bridge on our boat did not have to come off although the venturi panels did. But they told us that a GB36 was the largest (tallest) boat that could be transported by road without the flying bridge having to come off. There is one Manatee in our marina and its pilothouse sure seems considerably higher than the flying bridge on a GB36. So I wouldn't be surprised if the pilothouse would need to come off a Manatee for trucking. Also the trucking company told us we were lucky in that we were moving the truck on the west coast and not the east coast, particularly New England where, they said, bridge clearances tend to be lower than out west because many bridges are quite old Moving our boat on the east coast, they said, would most likely require the flying bridge to come off depending on where it was coming from and going to. The cost to truck our boat in 1998 was just shy of $4,000.

Marin has an important point about the overpasses being a bit lower in the east. *They are. *I have, however, moved 15 ft. high loads from Round Rock, TX (stone crusher conveyors) to Baltimore. *If my memory serves me, there were only 10 or so overpasses on the interstate (well marked) that had to be circumvented, and that was way back in the 80's. *Lot's of changes could have happened since then, but I doubt if they built any new bridges lower than 15' clearance. *The trouble is ya just can't pull up to a tight clearance overpass and creep under it when it's rush hour. *Travel times are justifiably restricted, and escorts are a must. *The nice thing, however, is that the truck scales just want to see you out of their State as quick as possible, and typically don't give you any crap.

RE: Are Krogen Manatees Truckable?

Our Manatee, #46, was trucked from SW FL to TX in '03 by previous owner. He said it cost him $7K, windshield & roof had to be removed. We'll have to repeat this in a couple of yrs when we move BON DIA from Lake Travis to the Gulf.

Supposedly there is a trucker in N TX that specializes in hauling large sailboats on a low boy trailer. Ill look & post his contact info.

If you're considering the Manatee on YW in League City, it looks good on the internet; it was not available when we purchased ours. We're relatively new to trawlers & concerned the smaller engine, 50 hp vs the more common 90 hp, might not be best setup, if for nothing else re-sale value. Another Manatee with the smaller engine has been for sale for a long time on YW. I suggest you ask the Krogen dedicated forum about it. http://krogencruisers.net/dolphin/

RE: Are Krogen Manatees Truckable?

There are also a few advantages with the Perkins,,,not the least of which is escaping those terrible parts prices. My hull was converted to a 140 Yanmar in '99. Jim Krogen said that he could get 8.5 knots in his own 90 HP Manatee, although I never knew one that did. My boat will go 8.4 knots against wind and current, but begins to dig a big hole at the stern when trying to go beyond that. The Perkins 50 is will push the Manatee to hull speed, albeit somewhat more taxing to the engine. If the best Manatee I could find had a Perkins, I wouldn't let it stop me from making the deal. Test the boat and see for yourself. Wasn't "Snug", Capt. Bob's boat (Captain Bob's Publications) a 50?

Was planning on joining Krogen Cruisers. The subscription renews April 1st. Was unable to contact anyone there to find if I joined now whether I would have to renew (pay again) April 1st.

For O C Diver.....I was going to post the question on the Krogen Forum but I see you've joined. Let me know if you're flying to HOU area to look at the Manatee. I live in SAT but if time allows could meet you there.

OC...that boat lives right behind mine!!! I have been on it. And while I did not look at it with a "buyer's eye", it is in excellent shape. Please contact me if you are headed this way. The guy that owns it is a professional Captain and has maintained the boat accordingly!

Hi John,

Thanks for the information. Was planning on heading down next week, but the boat went under contract Saturday. Broker told me that that the buyer has backed out of three other contracts on newer boats after they were surveyed. Broker didn't sound real optimistic on the sale going through and said he would contact me if it didn't. So we will see what happens.....

Old Stone...you're talking about SXSW (South by Southwest Music Festival)...huge worldwide attraction & very popular venue for new artist. Congrats on your daughter's success. We're lake people, live 100 miles SW of AUS & rarely go to the city.* We enjoy*hanging out at the lake listening to our same old*CDs &*planning our escape to open water in '12.

RE: Are Krogen Manatees Truckable?

Lake Travis is the crown jewel of Texas' inland lakes just W of Austin, all formed by dams along the often flooded Colorado River. Length is ~ 60 miles, we operate in the lower third where the lake is widest but also roughest. Water is extremely clean & shoreline is mostly rocky. No real beaches. Max depth is 160 in the river channel but rises quickly near shore. Due to floods & droughts the lake level fluctuates 40+ ft. This has been a great home for our 340 SR, hundreds of nights spent anchored up with friends but we dream of coastal cruising so when a local KK36 came for sale we purchased with hopes of moving her to the Gulf in a couple of years.
