GB 32 Total height for transport.

Good evening everyone. We finally pulled the trigger on a sweet GB 32 1974 located in Savannah, GA. We are planning to ground transport the boat to Apalachicola, FLA. The boat Survey showed an “air draft” of 13’ 9”. Is this a reasonable height from keel to fly bridge, minus mast and Bimini? The transporter is asking. Any comments are appreciated. Thanks

Air draft PLUS draft would be the closer measurement.

Air draft is height above water. 13'9" seems about right.



Hull draft is everything below the water. In some instances, this can include running gear, but I wouldn't count on it. You always need a little leeway to keep off the bottom.

Go to Grand Banks Owner's Resources and look at the archives for the engineering drawing of a GB32. The bottom of the keel to the top of the flying bridge wind screen on a GB42 is 13’ 4”. This is with the mast and what ever else removed. I imagine a GB32 is a bit less.

You’ll have to add a few inches to get the keel off the ground on the trailer. Try contacting a reputable boat hauler. They probably have the dimensions of your boat from past experience.

I couldn’t stand myself! I went to Grand Banks Owner's Resources and looked at a manual for a member’s GB32 (hull #277). The bottom of the keel to the top of the flying bridge wind screen (venturi) is 13’-9”. The venturi is easy to remove which will give you about one foot less in height.

Edit: Although the GB site noted above is a good source of information specifically related to Grand Banks boats, Trawler Forum is the place to go for all boating systems and exchange of ideas. Not affiliated, just a happy customer!

GB 32 Transport

We recently trucked our 1990 GB 32 from California to Washington. In order to get the height down, we had to remove the flybridge bimini, the windshield, dashboard railing, wheel, compass, and Morse engine control---everything above the fiberglass. When loaded onto a lowboy trailer, the height off the road came in a 14'11", one inch under the 15' permit limit.

Thanks Oldersalt. Good to know. We are just closing on a 1974 GB 32 #428. Moving first to Brunswick from Savannah via the ICW. Staging for the trip to Apalachicola after we get settled down from our visit from Michael.

You should enjoy the trip and do it in stages on weekends. Plan ahead where to leave the boat and take one way rentals home. The fun and memories will be more valuable when you transition from "slow go" to "no go". Right now I assume you are a "go go".

Mr. ab. Have you looked into hiring a delivery captain? It seems to be about 1000 miles or so. @ 70 miles/day, that's about 2 weeks.
Perhaps you could join the "crew" at various points along the route for short stints.
Just a thought.

Ok thanks everyone. We got the boat home to Apalach via ground transport. Fairly reasonable and very competent transport. We did end up having an escort so the end tab was higher but within budget. Very glad to have the lady home and tucked into Battery Park. She is a sweet boat. Now the real fun begins. Again thanks all.
