Collision Between Charter Fishing Boat and Sailboat Near Thomas Point

Friday, August 17, 2018 - 15:23
Earlier this afternoon, around 12 p.m., the Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) reported on Twitter that they, along with the Anne Arundel County Fire Department and U.S. Coast Guard Mid-Atlantic were responding to a two-boat collision in the Chesapeake Bay near Thomas Point. The NRP has just released the update that there were no serious injuries in the collision between a charter fishing boat out of Kent Island and a J/105 sailboat out of Annapolis. According to the NRP, the US Coast Guard will take the lead on the investigation.

That's pitiful. Too much autopilot and not keeping watch.

From the weather conditions evident in the pictures, I''m not at all sure the sailboat could have done anything to avoid this collision. The fishing boat had to be moving at a pretty good clip to have mounted that far aboard the sailboat, while the sailboat without wind, was a sitting duck!
In this case, I believe that the fishing boat was 100% at fault.
