Where do you guys store your fenders when not used?

Rear deck storage or upper deck?

I was thinking of getting a set or 2 of those rail mount fender holders.

Suggestions?

Those rail mount holders work well but before you buy them try to picture where you will mount them and ask yourself if that will interfere with your vision forward.

Don't ask me how I know.

I love my round fenders but they can not be stored. I just walk over and around them. Hate the look of a boat going down the lake with the "laundry" hanging over the side.

Different boat, but I've got a pair of those rail mount holders up on my bow. I can't really say they cause any visibility problems for me, but I also don't have a lower helm, so my eyes are 2 - 3 feet above the top of the holders. You can see them in these pictures. First picture is the view from the helm at low speed, the second is the view up on plane. Both were taken at approximately my eye height while seated.

Fenders in the holders in the pictures are the 10x26 Taylor Made Big B units, which are my normal docking fenders. For travel involving locks, I've got a set of ball fenders that come along (but are otherwise deflated and stored at home). Those don't fit in holders, so they go on the back deck on the inboard side of the hard taff curtains lashed up tight to the railing.

Make sure you get the right holders. The rails on the 400 are a really big diameter.

I am wondering where Mainship 400 owners may have these types of holders mounted...I guess the only location is fwd amid ship area.....

I am not sure but does the 400 have stainless or aluminum rails? If they are aluminum then the S/S fender holders should be insulated from the rails.

Fender holders

The rails on a Mainship 400 are Stainless. I have attached a photo of my fender holders. I don’t feel the mounting location hinders access to the bow and does not affect visibility from the lower helm.

Thats what I think I need, does they attach to the stantion or wrap over the rail?

I had a set of fenders & holders from a previous boat. Looked all over on my MS 34 to find a place to mount them and decided against it. I hang them horizontal from the rails and find it looks OK and are handy to where they are needed without blocking thr side decks.
I use adjusters on the top end of a through hole fender an a stopper knot on the bottom. With slack in the adjuster it's easy to pull some line through the bottom and a half hitch holds the bottom. Adjuster allows easy access of height / level. - Fender hangs above gunnel without projecting inside or outside the hull significantly.
I keep a ball fender up forward right where the anchor platform meets the hull. Again, its out of sight and handy to the fwd area where I use it. Couldn't find a pic of that.
Just a thought

The PO mounted them forward on our 34T. We found they got in the way every time we tried to move to the bow or back.

We relocated them to the upper deck. Out of the way for us and we only used them maybe a dozen times a year so no big hassle.

On my AT34, I dont mind hang them vertically over the side.
Of course if I mounted them outside the railing, that might be an option too.
I am thinking about buying a plastic box for a collar, mounting forward and out board starboard side, fwd of the pilot house door.

I bought fender holders then realized they clobbered the bejabbers out of anywhere I tried to mount them. My fenders fit nicely under the middle seat on the port side of the fly bridge on my MS 400. And they are out of the elements when not in use.
