I pulled my windlass to replace the motor and gearbox. I was surprised to find that when they installed the windlass, they never sealed the balsa cored deck after hole sawing the hole for the windlass and the deck hawse.
I was able to hog out a bunch of mush and get to the decent wood. I filled the gap with Marinetex. (I'm not 100% sure this was the best solution, but I had to do something. I had to redrill the mounting holes to reinstall the windlass.
You might want to pull your windlass and take a look at yours as well. If it was sealed properly, it's an hour of work for piece of mind. If not, then you have a project.
