Mainship 34 Trawler question.
Lookin' to downsize and lookin' at the Mainship 34 as one of our club members bought one recently and we had a look-see. This boat has hatches in the salon for access to the engine room. All the ones I have seen for sale, just have a small hatch in the cockpit for engine access, which as a DIYer is unacceptable.
What gives?

Ours has the cockpit hatch access and I prefer it that way.
Quieter in the salon / saloon
Easy access - no moving furniture
I can easily go down to make a check, drain racor, etc underway (w admiral at the helm)
I'm guessing it's a design change from the earlier eras.
Or a model difference - you mentioned MS 34 ??

Mainship built 3 very different 34's. The first version from the late 70's to early 80's had access through the salon. There are 3 variations of this boat the I, II and III, The 34T from the 2000's is a much wider boat and has access through the cockpit. They also made a 34 pilot that has no flybridge and a Down East lobster boat look.

We have a 2004 34 Mainship and the engine access in the cockpit under the stairs was what sold me on the boat. Easy to check the engine while under way and with a single engine you have plenty of room to work. This is our seventh trawler and the best, we love it.

Just the thought of humpin' batteries in and out of that little hatch is a "no go" for me.

That is why I have the yard guys do it -- about once every 7 years.
That "little" hatch was plenty big-enough for them also to remove the generator and drop in a new one. Now I believe they did have to remove the sound shield...

I changed three 8Ds through that hatch once--it was tough but doable. Nonetheless, I've switched out my two house 8Ds for four golf cart batteries. I'm no longer worried about changing batteries myself.
Ditto all other 34T owners' comments regarding noise and accessibility!

No worse than my other hatch...
It just takes friends & beer.
I've replaced 3 8Ds...2 above 2 below EZ

I do all my own work single-handedly so it would be a challenge workin' through that one hatch, not to mention workin' with that low overhead.
