Mainship 34 Pilot Shaft-Casing Hull Leak

The 2' prop shaft enters and exits a dripless packing boot. The south end of the boot is double clamped onto a metal cylinder that penetrates the hull. The caulking around this metal cylider where it penetrates the hull is moist and mushy allowing sea water to enter the bilge. Is caulking deteriation normal for a 10 year old Mainship? Does the boat have to be pulled for a recaulking or are there other solutions?

That metal cylinder is part of a bronze casting that becomes the cutlass bearing housing just behind the deadwood.

I would consider leaking around the shaft tube a pretty serious but not immediate problem. The next time you haul out for a bottom job, the whole bronze casting should be removed, cleaned, dried out and rebedded.

So now you have caused me to take a look at my 10 year old Pilot 34! I will let you know what I find. Modern caulking should last more than 10 years.

Depending on the type of caulking originally used, it may have been harmed by oil in the bilge at one time.
