Seattle Boat Show 2019

Visited the Seattle Boat show this weekend and saw ALL the boats. We tend to see the same things over and over so we focus on what's new. This year my favorites were:

1. Queenship 60 "Sea Spirit". Absolutely beautiful. They are as impressive in person as they are in Passagemaker Magazine articles.

2. Devlin Boatbuilders Sockeye 45 "Edwin Dawson" a sturdy little couples trawler built for anything.

3. 55' Coaster "Teddy Bear". Now I understand why people like those Coasters so much - an amazing live-aboard, built like a tank with incredible range.

I also found a really great looking synthetic teak product that looks real (but even the DIY version is VERY expensive).

As usual, we need to play the Lottery this week. Anyone else go?

The coaster 55 sure took space to a new level. There was a North West 45 that was interesting but I know nothing about them. The Nordhavn 57 was, well, a Nordhavn and very nice.

I climbed on the 1980 Azmith 105’ for fun. Too much boat for me but I had a great talk with the owners boat mgr. The original owner hired her at 28 to mange staff, supplies and maintenance. When he sold the boat the second owner asked her to stay on. Now at the age of 67 and a 39 year career on one boat she says she is ready to retire, unless she likes the new owner, then maybe she will stay to train the next mgr.

I did have a great conversation with the Furuno Rep on GPS rollover issues.

Was disappointed that Icom was displaying a new sat phone but didn’t know a thing about it.

Garmin Rep gave me a great update on “In Reach”.

The Inverter Reps were utterly clues about their equipment.

Coastal Explorer was showing their software off on a $300 Surface tablet, don’t expect an Apple or android version. Nemo is on sale for $500 during the boat show.

There was a guy selling Chinese diesel heaters but since he wasn’t in the booth i don’t have pricing.

Standard Horizon has a nmea 2000 radio now but only in their top tier model.

I saw a lot of snake oil being sold as well.

Heading there tomorrow with a small shopping list. The best part is the tamale trailer on the street......

I looked at that Nemo also! I want to get my AIS and Radar displayed on the Coastal Navigator screen, but I am not sure yet if that’s what I need...

Getting the AIS on your Coastal Explorer can be done with a less expensive device. Your radar would have to be compatible with CE and i’m Not sure which model they use. Overlaying radar on CE or any chart plotter is over rated. I find the accuracy unacceptable and some data gets dropped. I have switched back to one screen dedicated to radar and one to chart plotter.

Several years ago Teddy Bear was at the Trawler Fest in Anacortes. What a amazing boat. I believe we all voted the best boat in the show. At that time there was a helicopter on top but I saw the boat last week in La Conner and I see it was gone.

I concur with the above advice re seperate radar display. Any experienced air traffic controller, such as...well...me, will tell you the key to a good set-up is to remove any information that might cover, confuse clutter or otherwise degrade the radar targets. For our purpose, the critical info is bearing, range and rate of closure . Detailed mapping actually doesn't provide that and may even hide critical info.
