Went ashore to do a little prospecting found an abandon gold mine from 1918.

Still a lot of old equipment laying around most of it destroyed during the 1964 good friday earthquake and the following tsunami. Didn't find any gold this time. Lots of hard rock mines still around. This mine had a tram set up to haul out the ore. You can see the Pelton Wheel that used water to run the tram. Lots of wooden pipe wrapped with wire

Thanks for the comments.

*I am totally amazed every time I go out. (Term used for a boat ride) Rain, shine, fog or wind. It is really an amazing place.* I am so fortunate to have as my cruising grounds.*

Some times I think I am cruising through a giant picture postcard.

*You are, SD.* That is an amazing cruising ground.* Thanks for posting, and please keep it up.

We have an old mine close to Thorne Bay at the upper end of Kasaan Bay. The Salt Chuck Mine. It's going to be (or is) the site of a reclamation project so the next time we take friends from outside down there all this old junk may be gone.*

Dave - Any pictures of Forest Dream to show us? What a way to grow up!
*The Forest Dream was my Grandfathers Schooner. I searched the arcives at The Grenfell society In St Anthony and could not find any photos of her I did find records of her tying up to the co-op warfe. I did speak to an maritime historian for Newfoundland and learned when she was sold and put into service hauling coal and Lumber to Labrador.

Powered with a Make-or-break**gas engine. . I remember*my grandfather starting it with a wooden dowel stuck in the flywheel. He would give it a spin*and then work it back and forth * then bang bang bang off she would go. It didn't even use a battery just a what I think was called a low tension magnito. No external coil is required in this case because the winding of the magneto itself becomes the inductor and the circuit is simplified, also the IGNITER is normally closed and trips open only when a spark is required. The timing of the magneto and the ignitor is important so that its "peak" output occurs at the igniter "break" time.

I don't think she made more than a 1/2 knot under power. Just enough to get her out of the harbor

How did you learn of the Forest Dream?

Eric. Go up there and get that old diesel engine. Hate to see that go to the scrapeyard. Larry

Here's a better pic of the old mine. Taken by a friend Shane VanOrden.
