42' Flybridge raised helm deck... thing

What's it for? I mean the older ones had a teak duckboard there, on the boat deck, behind the upper helm, and the later ones have a molded raised sole/deck, what 6" above the boat deck level?

Why? Is there stuff under there? Or is is some sort of concession to altitudinally disadvantaged helmsmen?
 
Port side carrying 2” conduit to mast for wiring. Starboard side I use for storage.
