No offense to the captain and crew but, I was on an old US destroyer, DD881, that had green water up on the helm station more than a few times. That's why they put nearly unbreakable glass up there and water tight doors.

To say, 'It was the results of global warming', is in my mind, foolish and just an excuse.

The captain should have said something such as, "Whoa mama, that was the biggest wave I have ever seen."

Rouge wave happen. They have happened for 100s of years. Plus, I doubt if the ship was ballast down, for the rough weather.

The climate is indisputably warming...the mountains where I live are rounded up to 5,500' in elevation (the depth of the ice sheet) and pointy & sharp edged (not eroded by ice) above 5,500' so it's been warming here for a long time.

The question is whether we are giving a minute kick to a can that was already rolling down the road.

Why people get their panties all bunched up over the 'politics' of it I have no idea (unless it threatens their lifestyle or accumulated wealth?) because it should be a fact based discussion.
 
This was a political thread from the first post. The article linked is about a wave vs ship moment and yet it manages to loop in Chinese Human Rights and Global Warming ?

The thread title might as well have been "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here...."

Sir, let me make it clear.

Please note that I just intended to report a serious incident that HMNZS Patrol Vessel Otago faced last December which I thought was interesting to post also NZ Defense Minister Ron Mark’s point of view.

I trust you are old enough to figure out for yourself that the second part of the article - Chinese human rights - had nothing to do with the first part. By the way, neither the advertising appearing on the link I posted had nothing to do with the first part of the article... Then let us not get caught on words, please be serious and read again the title of my thread.

I have no knowledge about global warming science, but it’s not because the US as well France are not much affected by global warming that it is not happening. Indeed most people know climate change is happening but most don't believe it will harm them or others. So, if posting about environmental issues which may affect the safety at sea, is regarded as a political topic therefore a violation of rules, I have nothing to do here.
 
I think you may have misunderstood my comment. I'm sorry I was not more clear. You found a boat related article, and you posted it. I see nothing wrong with that and did not mean to imply there was.

But anyone who reads that article and wants to have an apolitical discussion about it will be disappointed.

The nice thing about a forum, especially one as active as this one, is there are so many threads and contributors. You can be very selective and still while away many hours per day here.

In the interest of freedom I think the onus for selectivity is greater on the reader than the poster.

I am sure most in the NZ Navy are cringing at how this story was written.

It's a Captain's job to keep their boat safe.

Global Warming does not in itself cause 20 m waves, so the link is specious at best.
 
The current environment (at least in the US) is to question facts, and sources, so I won't bother posting the links to some of the reputable science based web sites I found on a google search noting that GW may indeed be the cause of larger wave heights we are experiencing. IE, rogue waves have always been around, but their frequency appears to be increasing.

What does this have to do with this discussion????? There is a chance that the frequency of rogue waves is not increasing at all. It is simply because we have the ability to monitor them more closely. My point here is that you can't always take something at face value. There may be other things at play. In this case....the ability to measure/monitor/report rogue waves.

NZ only recently, after a long ban,permitted US nuclear powered vessels in its waters.
NZ has strong "progressive" views on a number of subjects.
Surely none of the additional easily ignored verbiage detracts from the essence of the report.

There is a lot of low hanging fruit on this thread. However...to suggest that the gender of the skipper is a relevant detail is TOTALLY out of line and completely unacceptable.

A big wave vs a medium ship will always be an interesting event.

Whether the skipper of that ship is a man or a woman is, and ALWAYS will be, totally irrelevant, and to suggest otherwise is an affront to both men and women, everywhere.

I'm not so sure about that. If you follow the Naval Service you'll see it's still a pretty hot topic. Not saying who is right or wrong, I'm just saying that the gender issue isn't anything like settled.
 
The US has at least one female Commanding submarine officer plus more than a few enlisted female members.
What I dont like is the women still consider pregnancy as an easy out.
