Custom 33' Glen-L design "union jack"
hi,
my name is Bruce, and i am out of Fayetteville, NC
not really a coastal area, but i am connected to Wilmington, NC via the Cape Fear river, 3 locks and about 90 miles and i have the world at my keel....

speaking of keel..... i do not now have a boat, but i do have a dream :)
i purchased the plans for a Glen-L design "tug cruiser" know as the "union jack"
she is drawn as a 31' semi displacement cruiser, stretchable 10%, and powered by a single 40-70 hp diesel

about a year and a half ago i bought an 18' travel trailer to see if i could be happy and content in a small confined space for extended times.....well, yes i can :) and am loving it..... if i was more land locked inclined i would surely be a tiny houser by now.... in fact, the "bug" has been such an enjoyable experience, i have a new found drive to start my cruising adventures....

a few years ago i was the proud owner of a '64 31' Marinette express cruiser, i miss that boat to this day, but in all honesty she was not my dream boat, too many engines, wrong fuel, way too fast........ but i do still have the spot light, perfectly restored just waiting for a new home on the up coming "MV Mhyzhen" (think "my zen" with a southern drawl)

ok, ive rambled enough for now....
im looking forward to meeting, and learning from lots of great folks here, ive been lurking for a month or so now, so i think i have a grasp on the surroundings...... this is going to be a long drawn out experience, so look for lots of photos, videos, lulls, frantic over drives, and tons of questions, lol !

thanks, Bruce

Welcome! Are you planning to build the tug, or are you shopping for something similar? If building, where/who/what are you thinking of hiring to build it, or are you doing it?

Whatever your path, best of luck with it!

i am planning on building
but that's not to say if the perfect project should present itself i wouldn't be willing to adapt and adjust current plans......

as of yet, i haven't purchased any steel or major tools not already owned, and welding classes don't start until after the first of the year, so if in the next couple of months something should pop up i would be more then willing to weigh my options.....
i have a good buddy who is a fabricator, so i figure after school learning all the technical stuff and getting my feet wet i will hire him for a few days to teach me the real world applications and of course tips/tricks of the trade while laying the keel

i need to cut down a couple of old growth oak trees (to make room for the scene of the crime) and i mean big ones, 60 footers w/trunks so big you cant wrap your arms around them..... that's going to be a sad day, those trees were planted when my house was built 94 years ago..... but, one already has about a 40 degree lean to it from storm winds and saturated ground from some of our famous Carolina thunder storms over the years, the second has about a 5 degree lean so it is something that is going to have to happen anyway....

needless to say, whatever i end up doing, there is going to be one sweet oak/black walnut helm station involved !

Have you decided between the “curved cruiser stern” or the flat transom?

curved cruiser !
want to stretch out to 34 feet
and since i plan on making a water maker, im thinking of halving the water tank and increasing fuel capacity

Your plans sound interesting, to say the least. Please keep us posted on your progress. If you're open to accepting and showing visitors your work over the next few years, please let us know.

here is a very close representation of my vision..... this is the Glen-L union jack with a few tweaks

i tried to post a link but it has to be approved.....
look up "tug yacht 33" on you tube, that is a very close match to my vision

...... but i can assure you, there will be no "proper British certified steel" in her..... but there will be a proper working funnel ! lol
