I am getting more and more into the Trawler idea. Currently I own a 35' monohull sailing boat but the space and liveability of a trawler appeals to me. Problem is: I live in Cape Town, South Africa and all the boats are in the US. There is a very nice 34' trawler advertised here which falls into my price range. But how to get it over the Atlantic. Our sea is quite rough here, lots of wind around and very often over 2o knts and 10 ft waves are more or less normal. Will a trawler be the right vessel for Cape Town?

Sail will be more comfortable in those conditions. Since you can't find anything nearby I think that tells you that trawlers are not popular for some reason. Probably weather.

Almost all US "Trawlers" are lakes, bays and river boats.

They are not built or outfitted for operation in a long hard blow.

A few run outside in nice weather but the Cape of Good Hope was never contemplated.

Why not find a local boat built to take the offshore seas and put a few goodies in it?

You dont need a teak overhead or ceiling to have fun.

Plan B would be a local 60 ft motor sailor.

I think Bayview is making lots of sense!
