NMEA 2000 Yanmar guages

I have a 2007 Yanmar that is supposedly nmea 2000 capable, and I noticed on my new Garmin chartplotter that there is a display option for engine gauges.

How would one hook the Yanmar up to the backbone? Do I run a cable back to the engine compartment? Is it worth the trouble?

My though was to have a redundant (more accurate?) set of gauges, and I think it would also give me fuel flow data, which would be fun to watch while Im supposed to be looking out the windows. ?

I would check and see if it's compatible with the Maretron EMS-100, if it is you'll have to buy another N2k cable, tee, wiring harness for EMS-100, and the EMS-100.

I looked into this for a previous boat with a 2005 Yanmar motor. The Maretron will only convert data that your engine already provides or has sensors for. If your Yanmar does not already have a fuel flow sensor, the Maretron product won't give you fuel flow.

If it is NMEA 2000 compliant there should be a connector on the engine control computer that provides a NMEA 2000 output. I saw on an Austrailan website https://www.outbackmarine.com.au/Yanmar-8LV-Series-NMEA-2000-Interface-Cable.6218 a cable that may or not be for your motor.

Yes, you would have to run a new cable forward, but you can use shielded twisted pair signal cable (WM carries in some stores) and splice the connectors on either end. I bought a Yamaha cable a couple years ago to do the same thing and decided after I saw what it did, I could just as easily have spliced directly into the motor wiring behind the Yamaha connector and saved $100.
