When getting a permit to move a building a half mile by road becomes an issue...and he wants his new office pronto...

Oh the permits I've dealt with in my life, but the funniest was still as a kid. See we bought a lot on the lake just for weekends and we purchased a boathouse that was several miles up the lake. Drove the boats inside it and drove it home like that. To other people it just looked like a self propelled boathouse. Now that was the easy part.
It had been on the lake for years and did have full electric. However, we needed to get electricity run to it so needed a pole to be placed and electric from it to the boat house. Also we wanted to get the electric all checked out to be sure the wiring was good. Well, couldn't get inspected by the county or an electrician licensed in that county as they wouldn't approve wiring to a boathouse. Oh, and couldn't get electricity run to it. Permanent electricity that is. But got it inspected by someone not licensed in that county and also found out we could get a temporary service. Electric to the poll near it and then we could run lines from the poll to the boathouse. But just a temporary service, not permanent. We asked how long the limit on temporary was. We were told by the power company there was no limit. So, got temporary and the last I knew which was 25 years later it's still in use the exact same as it was on the same "temporary service." I'm guessing we're to year 30 of temporary by now and no change.

Here's one of the other house moves.
Moved a house from Barnegat Inlet, NJ to the north shore at East Island on Long Island.
The house was designed by a famous architect and the guy in Long Island had a house designed by the same architect so he bough this as a guest house out behind the mansion.
Pretty good idea of selling the filming rights of the move to I think the history channel that did a documentary on it.
The pic is going under the VZ bridge entering New York Harbor.

The old #9 house! We saw it leave and are pretty sure we saw it in its new location while cruising down the Sound one day.

A good friend of mine owned a very nice house in Vero Beach Florida. It was on the water. He wanted to build a bigger house on the lot. He ended up giving the old house to the Smithsonian. The Smithsonian had it put on a barge and moved a few miles south to their research station in Ft. Pierce. They use it as living quarters for visiting scientists.

I guess it's becoming more popular as it is harder to move by road and more companies are getting experience using barges.
