If purchasing a salt water boat, with either closed or raw water cooled, what are some of the things to look for? Also on the Lehman engine, what is the life expectancy of the engine before you would need to rebuild it. Is an engine (presumably maintained properly) of 5 to 7k hours still a good engine?

Greetings,
Welcome aboard. A well maintained Lehman can go upwards of 15K hours IF well maintained. So far we're in the 5K area and they still hum along.

(presumably maintained properly)

Hard to asses in a 20-40 year old boat.

I have 2 135hp Lehmans also approaching 5k hours and they both run wonderfully. Lehman 135's don't require much maintenance, but what they do require must be done (just like any engine) if one wants maximum life out of them. I have the maintenance records from previous owners and they look good. There are folks around who have achieved well over 10000 hrs on their Lehmans so I'm optimistic that mine still have a lot of life left in them.
