Galvanized steel ice box

What are your thoughts on using galvanized (electro) sheet steel for icebox construction? Stainless is very expensive here. Some sort of coating (baked enamel, rubberized, etc.) would of course coat the interior.

many have been made that way...but once scratched and rusting...they seem to go downhill fast...fortunately repair is relatively cheap...but I'm talking other material for structure and galvanized steel as a liner.

How about either sheet fiberglass or ply/epoxy/fiberglass then painted with a good white enamel. We added insulation to a sailboat box by doing the above and years later it still looked and functioned great.

How did the white enamel paint hold up on the interior over the years? Did it start chipping and flaking due to temperature or humidity?

In the four years we had the boat after the box was reconfigured it was great, this included the 2+ years of full time cruising we did sailing the South Pacific.

galvanized (electro) sheet steel

The electro coatings are very thin.
Hot dipped is better , Getting paint to stick to galvanized is not easy.

Copper would work as would aluminum.

Stainless steel is sold by weight. Thinner is lighter which is cheaper. Use 24ga as a skin over 1.5" rigid Styrofoam.

You could seal the interior with something like Rhino Linings Corporation | Rhino Linings Corporation - Protective Coatings, Spray-On Liners and Spray Polyurethane Foams truck bed liner.
