    Cockpit Winches

Self Tailing: You wind the rope 3x around a winch then you have to keep some tension on the tail of the rope so that the coils grip the winch and allow the winch to wind the rope in. A self-tailing winch keeps that tension on the rope, so you dont have to crank with one hand, while maintaining...

    Real Estate funding your cruising?

I am also very happy with my Multi Fam props which I have been doing since 2013. Just looked at one today as a matter of fact. Prior to that I did two SFHs which were just not for me. To each their own.

    Cockpit Winches

Agree that with foot switch operated electric winches you do not need self-tailing. Nice installation!

    Cockpit Winches

Agree, it could be possible on a non self tailer, although the likelihood of getting a wrap (a tangle) is high and the thought of tailing a 100' or so of webbing is more than I would want to take on!

    Cockpit Winches

Unfortunately it would not work with a webbing line. The self-tailing mechanism is a effectively a clutch with a top and bottom plate that are sprung loaded. The line is wrapped around and as the line is pulled tight it compresses the spring, opening the plates to accommodate the line where it...

    Cockpit Winches

Former sailor with experience of both manual and electric powered self-tailing winches. I would say that for your docking needs manual will be perfectly adequate, probably two speed and definitely self-tailing. Without self-tailing you need two hands on your winch at all times - one to crank...

    Real Estate funding your cruising?

All very good points and one of my properties is in an area that has recently imposed a number of these tenant centric laws. It will be sold as soon as I line up a 1031 exchange elsewhere.

    New salon table

Updating my reply and apparently they are two different but very similar fast growing (ie sustainable) hardwood species (Parota and MonkeyWood). We got a slab and made a bar top out of it.

    New salon table

Looks lovely and I believe it may be the same wood that our local carpenters call monkey wood. I'll attach a photo of the mill where we bought slabs for our home bar.

Looking for convenient pump for dewatering bilges other than hand pump

I have a cheapish 120v one with a long cord that I bought on Amazon. I use it for my stern garage well which does not have a dedicated bilge pump and also to empty the last few inches in my concrete spa.

    Real Estate funding your cruising?

I am not the OP but I did post several responses along the way. My update follows. At the time of the original thread I owned 17 apartment units in 4 buildings. I managed roughly half of them myself and my son managed the others. During the last 3 years my net return on invested capital has...

Fixing boats in Exotic Places - are new boats really that bad?

We commissioned a new Hylas 49' sailboat. It proved to be an amazing home for our liveaboard ocean voyages. It took 3 months to work through "commissioning issues". Boats are not built like cars are today. They are built like cars were in the 1920's. You can expect waste material to show up...

    Another holding tank vent question

Glad that you solved your problem. I did not see whether you are flowing fresh or sea-water. I have used fresh on my last 3 boats - no smells.

    Understood.

    backup camera installation

I only have one back up camera (for my 19' 10" beam). Wide angle provides the view I need to both sides of the stern. It can also see my towed dinghy as long as it is within 50-75 ' of the stern.

    Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed

Older large ships tend to get priced out of the major markets before they reach this stage of obselescence. They incur substantially increased insurance costs after 25 years of age and of course maintenance issues only get greater. Generally the smaller ones move into smaller trades...

    Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed

Update on the insurance angle: The Containership Dali is owned by Grace Ocean Pte Ltd and operated by Singapore ship manager, Synergy Marine Group, with manages about 660 ships. It is time-chartered to Maersk which has no involvement in the ship’s operation and is likely to join claimants as it...

    Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed

I have been out of the industry for a few years, so these comments relate to situation a few years ago, likely still the same. 90% of the world's major commercial tonnage is entered (insured) in Mutual Protection and Indemnity clubs. These clubs provide limits of approx $2bn. They are backed...

    Engine Odometer Missing

Agree with Commodave. At this age the engine survey & oil analysis if you can get one with hours in the engine behind it, will reveal way more than the nominal engine hours. They are great engines, I have the 8V92TA's on my boat which are successor motors. Your motors powered Tanks in WWII...

First Boat Confusion - Insurance & Boat Length Help

I have a suggestion. Pursue your goal boat and the insurance to go along with it. But if you continue to get pushback, simultaneously and as soon as reasonably possible start establishing a 'ladder'. Even experienced sailors get hit when we move to a boat more than 10' (or so) larger than our...

    Potable water

When we were cruising for 4 years we used our watermaker 90% of the time with its carbon filters on the output. Since then I am not ashamed to say I drink hose water which may put me in the minority. Most of my guests used plastic bottled water and I always have a case or two on board for...

    Beebe 61 for sale

Fascinating backstory, thanks! I wonder why the ads were pulled so quickly? Usually listings hang around for a while even after offers are accepted. Also I think you got spell-checked "Roche Harbor".

orcas attacks... which protection for rudder and fins on trawlers?

That might work on land, but not in the Med/Atlantic. There have been a number of attacks in the vicinity of Gibraltar. (You can't get in or out of the Med to the Atlantic coasts without transiting the Strait of Gibraltar). ~A
