What are your thoughts about the reverso? Worth the investment?

    The Case for Going Slow

Back when I had my express cruiser, I'd fly across the lake every now and then, but it was far more comfortable and enjoyable to cruise at 7 knots, which was mostly how I used it.

Love those! They look perfect! BTW - I am a watch guy, I have a small collection. One of the players in the watch community, a German company called Wempe (pronounced "Vempe"), makes very high quality marine clocks. Worth taking a look at if you want something really special for your boat...

    Autonomous marine travel

Maybe, but keep in mind the whole "thing" about AI is it is constantly learning, not only from it's own experience, but from every other AI related device it has contact with. Over time, it will be safer than a pro, as it gathers data from every other pro and non pro. That's the idea anyway.

    Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed

When you can, I'd guess I'm not the only one here who would really appreciate your take on the whole mess.

Boating in Baltimore? Watch out for recently sunken bridge parts! :D

    Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed

Interesting that it had slowed to just 1.5 knots before it hit and was still able to cause that much damage.

    Autonomous marine travel

I'm sure you guys have heard about the container ship taking out a major bridge in Baltimore last night, yes? I'm guessing if it were autonomous, it probably wouldn't have taken out a bridge. Robots don't get tired at 1:30am. Just saying...

After seeing your boat in person, I can attest to the fact that your wife was right! So glad to hear you are getting her back out again. It's the one and only Helmsman I've had the pleasure of boarding. Such a beautiful boat. They've figured out how to tick an awful lot of boxes.

    Autonomous marine travel

I'm sure they will incorporate some sort of forward seeing sensor to avoid obstacles. My car has that now. Shurley the technology exists I would think. I do see your point though, commercial vessels would benefit greatly whereas a pleasure craft may use it a lot less frequently.

I may have missed it, but are you planning to do stabilizers?

    Autonomous marine travel

Ha! Maybe we should change the old saying to "Everything on a boat is already broken AND you are redundant, you just don't know it yet". :D

    Autonomous marine travel

I'd imagine a similar discussion was had a while back with the introduction of auto-pilot, which is on a majority of boats now.

    Autonomous marine travel

BTW, to those who say the technology is a long ways off, consider this: They exist today. The scientific community already has unmanned data gathering devices in service: https://noc.ac.uk/facilities/marine-autonomous-robotic-systems/asv https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/technology/usv/usv.html...

    Autonomous marine travel

Yea, maybe, but from my limited experience in crowded waters, I'd feel safer if some of the other boaters were being driven by a computer. You know, the "hold my beer, watch this" guys.

Which Starlink kit for the boat

A lot of folks seem to go with the RV version. Home ain't going to work. I did read something recently where service was revoked when they detected it being used off shore with an RV account, with the only option being to upgrade to marine, but I suspect that was a one off thing? I suppose it...

    Autonomous marine travel

I just watched a video about the latest generation of Furuno electronics: https://youtu.be/PcLAMXsHkJc?si=s9vQa1UL14OqxnS_ They now have auto routing that will route around other boats, shallows, buoys, etc, automatically. In other words, if your using auto pilot and have a course charted, and...

    Lithium Ion Tool Battery Fires

I've got a friend who works for a major European auto maker. According to him, almost all of the battery related fires in cars involved some sort of impact months, sometimes even a few years before they occured. They've learned a lot about them and build them better now. Still wouldn't want one...

US Couple in Caribbean feared dead

This was an incredibly unfortunate, one off incident. Very sad. I hate that these things happen and it breaks my heart, not only for them, but the family they left behind. But many folks have traveled down there and been just fine. I'm not in a position to judge anybody else. If folks want to...
