1984 Perkins 6354M Raw water exhaust issue?

Thanks, kinda my thought too. Nothing out of the ordinary though, sea strainer no cavitation bubbles ect. The outflow almost looks like calcium in it. Impeller I popped open and looks fine.....

Your go to rule for fuel reserve management

Recent discussion prompted some queries on fuel management. Specifically was around coastal cruising and distances between fuel fill up locations. I have 1100 liters of storage and a burn rate of 7L/hr at 7 knots. My absolute min is 200 L on board. I like to have at least 2x my projected fuel...

1984 Perkins 6354M Raw water exhaust issue?

New to me, started up today, no issues fired right up, go out back to check raw water and see this (approx 1300rpm). Anything to be concerned? After about 5 min calmed down but looks "aerated" at startup. Temp no issues. Last impeller change 1.5 years ago by PO. Heat exchanger tube stack removed...

    Sanding teak trim

Time for refinishing the teak on my 38' Cheer Mens Trawler. I'm fairly woodworking savvy but am I missing something with a process other than drilling out teak bungs and removing trim to refinish. I'm mostly concerned with scratching the gelcoat, I get being diligent with blue painters tape ext...

Combined remote and counter windlass control?

My Raymarine S100 remote for my Autopilot has a screen and could very easily display current feet/meters. In fact, as I ponder it, a complete system that has Autopilot/Windlass/BowThruster all on a lanyard that follows me around the boat.

Combined remote and counter windlass control?

As I solo, I would like the option to control the windlass remotely while tracking the feet (Display on the remote showing the feet). (example when I'm in the forward berth dealing with the chain pile) Recommendations?

40 year old Perkins Starter, rebuild just for maintenance?

Starter has no known issues but as part of a preventative maintenance move would having it rebuilt be warranted? 40 year old 6354M with 5000hrs. I carry a spare alternator but a spare starter cost is very high and thought a rebuild would be more cost effective. Thoughts?

    Perkins 6.354M remote start

As I'm 95+% solo cruising the thought of placing a remote (ER) engine starting switch has surfaced. Thought being if I need to bleed the fuel system would like to do it "on the fly" while cracking bleed ports/injector lines. Looking for ideas how to wire that in or would I just be better to get...

    Solo personal safety

Appreciate all the suggestions, quite a few I had not thought of. A form of a "ditch bag" is a great idea (flares/matches/food/water,etc). Again, appreciate the thoughts.

    Solo personal safety

Beginning my solo adventures on my 38' trawler in the PNW and the thought of safety is on my mind. While onboard I feel I have systems in place but looking for options while "exploring" in my RIB. I will be going to shore often in very remote regions up the BC coast. Ideas are percolating...

    Perkins 6-3544M Identifying model

Appreciate your reply STB. Other vessels I've owned I've always carried a plethora of spare parts, I want to start to build an inventory for this boat but needed specifics on the model ect. Is there a Perkins "go-to" for parts? ie O rings for the heat exchanger, starter, exhaust manifold...

    Perkins 6-3544M Identifying model

New to me 38' trawler, 1984 Perkins 6-3544M 5100 hrs, becoming more confused regarding this model vs the Range 4 135, seems they are the same? Anyone that could give some clarification, run out of search options, thought it would be easy! lol serial #TW7008U691101K

    Trawler vs Keelboat for liveaboard

Thanks everyone, really appreciate the insights. Yes, CharlieO - posted on a sailing forum too, seems much more of a "cult" sailing group over there, not trying to offend anyone, just doing due diligence. The romance of sailing hits hard up against the reality of navigating these waters of the...

    Trawler vs Keelboat for liveaboard

Was there a year ago, all prepared to buy and "turn left" all the way down the coast to the Sea of Cortez.

    Trawler vs Keelboat for liveaboard

Thanks all, some very very great points. Trawler is winning, hands down. Recall that trip from Gibsons to Comox on a big wet southeaster, heeled over, and the autopilot was on the fritz.....in Oct! Not bringing back great memories. But then that trip from Comox to Desolation sound, 12knot wind...

    Trawler vs Keelboat for liveaboard

Looking for thoughts on this dilemma. Retiring in a year, been on the water all my life. Owned multiple boats. Cruise the Pacific NorthWest. Keep wavering back and forth between a 36-39' sailboat vs 36-42' Trawler (Grand Banks style). Looked at every conceivable pro/con for both. Read through...
