    Standard Horizon or Icom?

I don't have any experience with Furuno or Garmin VHF. Have you?

    Is Autopilot Necessary In PNW?

Been on the water since I was a tyke. Turned professional in 1970. First autopilot 1983. A Wood Freeman, all it did was hold a heading. Now with AP tied to plotter I set a waypoint and it will maintain course over ground. Wouldn't be without one. I feel it adds to safety. Set the course...

    Standard Horizon or Icom?

Thanks all for your input. Seems Icom is still top of the game in quality of equipment. However they have slipped in customer support. A VHF is important gear. Icom it will be.

making new circuits from a dc distributing box

As you said Use the fuse that will protect the smallest wires in the circuit. You can put whatever fuse you need in the holder. If the fuse is rated less than the wire can handle but more than the heater requires you're good.

Anyone have experience with Shaft Loc?

In the for what it's worth column I don't think coolant vs raw water cooled has anything to do with light duty vs heavy duty. My previous boat was 502s driven by CAT 3208s coolant cooled. My current boat is 502s driven by Cummins 6BT raw water cooled. Both about the same HP on similar...

    Power for ER blowers

My lesson learned. On a delivery I turned on the engine room blowers on a hot day. The Cummins electronically controlled engines died a short time later. The blowers were powered from the start bank. Clearly there were other things wrong as well. Still it points to the risks of running any...

making new circuits from a dc distributing box

A fuse doesn't have a gauge. It has a rating at which it blows, time to blow etc. The fuse is there to protect the wire. And you. It needs to be sized such that it blows before the wire ampacity rating is exceeded. Please spend some time on Blue Sea Systems web site studying fuses and wire...

    Standard Horizon or Icom?

Thank you for the confirmation. My experience as well has been ICOM is head and shoulders above others in reception quality and clarity. And that this isn't the old ICOM when they truly provided outstanding customer support.

    Standard Horizon or Icom?

Time for a new VHF. The old one is very old and dead, just dosen't make sense to have it fixed. Long ago I favored Icom. But things have changed with that company. What's your preference?

LifePo4 in the engine room. Heat considerations?

Thank you. I was thinking they are much more heat sensitive than that.

LifePo4 in the engine room. Heat considerations?

This renewed thread Eco-worthy batteries has me considering lithium when the big old golf car batteries wear out. Because they are in the engine room that would be the easiest place to install the lithium bank. The other place is the lazarett. I'd have to move some components from the laz to...

Dometic VacuFlush head, my first dive into troubleshooting

As you gain experience maintaining the system it will become easier. Lots of good advice above on what to look for. Eventually you may run up against a vacuum loss you can't easily track down. Then you'll want a vacuum tester. The official Dometic tester or a roll your own.

    42’ Californian LRC mast height

You'd best calculate the air draft yourself. They were probably all different from one another when built. And probably most have been modified over the years. Great boats. Loved it but moved up a bit in size.

NMEA0183 Furuno Sounder to Garmin Plotter

It worked. Mostly. Using jumpers in case I had to reverse polarity or try a different pair the Garmin displayed digital depth. But when I made the "permanent" connections it failed. Either I didn't pay attention and reversed a couple or I have a bad connection. No matter, easy to fix and I...

    Ballast bar on steel keel?

reslifkin's response to my posting makes an excellent point. Do not slow down only to find you spend as he said a lot of time mushing around on top. That is a VERY risky position. You don't have as much hull in the water as you need for good stability. The boat is very easy to upset. It may...

    Ballast bar on steel keel?

Marco has given you excellent insight into the questions that need to be answered. As well as concerns about stability of the boat. You have learned how much weight aloft matters. As well as how shifting weights matter. Every pound you can move lower, every pound you can keep from shifting...

NMEA0183 Furuno Sounder to Garmin Plotter

Ranger, Thanks for chipping in. Much appreciated. You and I are looking through a different lens. I'm not saying you're wrong and I'm right, simply trying to understand things. I interpret the Furuno chart as TD = Transmit and RD = Receive. "A" as one NMEA port and "B" as the other...

NMEA0183 Furuno Sounder to Garmin Plotter

Anyone from the dark ages willing to help with NMEA0183 connections? I used to be OK with NMEA 0183 wiring but that was long ago in another lifetime. This will be one way. NMEA out will be from a Furuno FCV-620 depth sentences to a Garmin 1042. Yes, I want to use NMEA0183. The boat does not...

    Looking for advice please.

I was given the advice buy a hull and condition surveyor 3 boat purchases ago when considering an older boat to do the engine survey first. It's generally less expensive than a good hull and condition survey. If the engines are beyond help requiring a repower that will generally cost more than...

    Twin Engine Trawler Maneuvering Expectations

I started the thread drift on using rudders with twins. So I'll elaborate a bit. As psneeld says it is an advanced technique. Best used after mastering handling the boat with engines only and without thrusters or at least occasional minimal thruster use. I'll describe one of the situations...

    Twin Engine Trawler Maneuvering Expectations

Common advice for maneuvering twin screw boats is to center the rudders and use engines alone. This is good to a point. But you are leaving a useful control surface unused. In some situations I will use rudders as well. A well timed rudder in the direction you want the bow to turn along with...

    Why did voltage drop?

First I'll say I think the ProMariner ProNautic are the same as the Sterling Pro Charger are the same hardware designed by Sterling marketed under different names. If you disagree with that then disregard what I'm saying. I have the Sterling that exhibits similar behavior. It has two modes...

Nor I. I take tons of pics from lots of angles. Yet when I go to put something back together I wish I'd taken more.
